Costa de la Luz

Costa de la Luz - History

History

The age-old city has the largest cathedral in the world. It has the Moorish Alcázar, the Torre d'Oro, gorgeous gardens, museums, art galleries and pretty bridges over the River Guadalquivir. Explore the Barrio Santa Cruz or Triana with their winding lanes of tapas bars, restaurants and flamenco haunts. Seville can give you sun-dazzled squares, all kinds of exciting shops, orange trees, music, fiestas, ferias and above all, a warm welcome.

An early start can take you to for a day to Jerez - elegant home of sherry and the highspirited Andalucian horse. You can visit wine cellars and also take in an unforgettable equestrian show. You can visit the beautiful age-old City of Cádiz, said to be the oldest in Europe, and possibly the site of the Lost City of Atlantis.

Travelling further south you can reach Tarifa, where Spain and Africa face each other across the Mediterranean, and from where you can take a ferry for a day trip to Tangier, to be enchanted by the souks and cobbled squares, have coffee in a café and haggle for a carpet. All these fascinating destinations are within the easy realms of possibility from your holiday base at Nuevo Portil. A holiday in Spain can sometimes be called a cliché.

The Rio Tinto mine was bought and managed by a British company from the 1870's. In those days the mine was an inferno of toxic gases, mainly sulphur dioxide, released in the process of metal extraction.
